Singer-songwriter seems like it could have been invented as a term when Bonnie Raitt made her appearance on the music scene. This time out the veteran blues musician is largely taking on songs by other song writers. Songs by INXS, Jackson Brown, Randy Newman, Sippie Wallace and Joe Henry make up the majority of Dig in Deep’s roster. Adding in five original songs that she either wrote or co-wrote, makes this album another winner in a long line of them from Bonnie Raitt’s career. All songs are filled with passion and power. The sound is more than amply rounded out by her long time road band. All musicians of the highest quality. What else can be said about Raitt’s guitar playing? She is a master at the electric slide guitar. Few are comparable talents. Plus there is that voice. Effortlessly smooth. She and her band work their way through many of the classic American styles of music like blues, rock ‘n roll and R&B. With each winner album that she releases, it seems like Bonnie Raitt is going to be in her prime as long as she keeps making music. An album that warrants repeated plays.
