Just over one year ago millions of young girls were sent into a tizzy when One Direction member Zayn Malik announced he was leaving the boy band. The world seemed over for many. What actually happened is now fans of his and the band now have two entities to await music from. Or more precisely, they have new music to enjoy while One Direction is on its two year hiatus. What Zayn Malik proves with his first solo release, Mind of Mine, is that he can sing. That is the number one thing I took away from listening to the tracks found here. Some of us more mature folk out here doubt that members of boy bands have actual talent forgetting the lesson learned from Justin Timberlake. Now, I am not saying that Malik is as talented as Timberlake, but he certainly has his fair share. Over the pop, club and R&B songs on the album he demonstrates the range of his voice including a full control over his falsetto. The lowest moments are when he totally slows things down for ballads like “It’s You” (second single) and “Blue”. Though this is not because he is not a capable seducer as most of the songs have to do with him getting it on with one girl or another. The lead single “Pillowtalk” is just a taste of what is to come.
