In 2007 Aussie Kevin Parker decided he wanted to form a band. This is not your typical band in that it is basically the Kevin Parker show with backing musicians. Parker writes, produces and records the music himself and then takes musicians on tour with him. While on the road Jay Watson (guitars, synthesizer), Dominic Simper (guitar, synthesizer), Julien Barbagallo (drums), and Cam Avery (bass) tag along.
They started out slowly just releasing some EPs and singles over the first few years with their psychedelic rock sound attracting plenty of attention in their native land and elsewhere. Finally in 2010 Tame Impala released its debut album, Innerspeaker. It was roundly praised by critics. The follow-up came in 2012 and was entitled Lonerism. It sold well and earned them a Grammy nomination in the Best Alternative Music Album category. One year ago they released their third and most recently album, Currents, featuring the single “Let It Happen”.
Their sound is influenced by psychedelic rock from the 60s and 70s with plenty of fuzziness and reverb. You will also hear plenty of lo-fi in their music. Influences on the band (or really Kevin Parker) include My Bloody Valentine, electronic music, Supertramp, and the Bee Gees. Quite an eclectic mix and it goes a long way towards explaining the band’s sound.
