The Laugh Out Loud Musical The Producers Begins at the Segal Centre

the producers preview2It seems like an impossible thing to be saying world premiere when referring to the beloved musical, The Producers.  And yet I am going to use the term as for the first time ever The Producers is being presented in Yiddish.  And right here in Montreal!

The Dora Wasserman Yiddish Theatre, the country’s oldest Yiddish theatre troupe, has teamed up with the Cote Saint Luc Dramatic Society to bring the lively musical to the stage.  The Producers: A New Mel Brooks Musical will be presented in Yiddish with English and French subtitles at the Segal Centre.

The Producers began in 1968 as an Academy Award nominated musical film.  It features less-than-successful Broadway producer, Max Bialystock, and his quiet accountant, Leo Bloom, who have come up with what they believe is a foolproof way to scam backers out of their money.  They just have to put on a horrid musical.  The plan is seemingly perfect except for the fact that unexpectedly the show becomes a hit.

Like the play in The Producers, the show, adapted from the film, itself has been a massive hit.  It features the winning combination of catchy musical numbers and loveably odd characters.  This all added up to one of the more popular Broadway musicals of all time and a winner of 12 Tony Awards.
