Noir crime drama starring Guy Pearce in the lead role. That is enough to get most to watch, no? It has crime novelist Peter Temple as its creator; he is the man behind all these great characters. His writing is sharp and at times humourous. Rather than separate stories this is an over five hour miniseries. International intrigue, romance, East versus West, violence and mystery. A crime show that does not involve cops.
Former criminal lawyer Jack Irish (played by Guy Pearce) has had a rough go of it lately. His wife was murdered in a crime that remains unsolved. This led to plenty of disillusionment on his part. He left the law and is now a debt collector or odd job kind of guy. When not doing that (or even while doing that) he can be found at the local pub, racetrack or the wood workshop. It always seems like small jobs turn into much bigger ones when this guy is involved.
Irish finds himself ensnared in some religious conflict when an Australian aid worker is kidnapped by Muslim extremists. As if this case wasn’t enough his sometimes girlfriend and journalist Linda (played by Marta Dusseldorp) decides to move to the Philippines in order to get ahead in her job. Soon their two jobs criss-cross and another wrench in the spokes is when metal sculptor Sarah Longmore (played by Claudia Karvan) enters Irish’s life.
Guy Pearce is great as Jack Irish. Very believable even when he is getting bounced around. Actually the acting from the entire cast, cinematography and writing is all strong.
