steven tyler were all somebody from somewhereSteven Tyler solo is not Aerosmith music without the other guys playing the instruments. To his credit he does do something completely different on his debut solo album. Though there is a remake of “Janie’s Got a Gun”. But more about that later. This is his take on country music. It makes sense in the fact that he now resides in Nashville. That atmosphere and music culture has obviously rubbed off on him. The songs on the album have two kinds of sounds in that they are either mid-tempo or full on ballads. There is an authentic feel to it. Meaning it does not sound like he is forcing things or just doing it to distance himself from Aerosmith. For his age and hard life he sounds pretty darn good. In his distinct raspy, bluesy voice kind of way. It is completely suited for and makes sense that on the album he takes on Janis Joplin’s “Piece of My Heart”. He is like her male voice doppelganger. The reworking of “Janie’s Got a Gun” also makes sense in the context of this album. It fits right in tempo-wise and in regards to theme. Especially fits in with the stripping down and reworking of the guitar and bass to a more country sound.
