Opera de Montreal Presents Don Giovanni

don-giovanni-previewThe 37th season of Opéra de Montréal continues with Mozart’s Don Giovanni.  Regarded as one of Mozart’s strongest operas and one of the greatest of all time.  The lyrics and the music come together in some kind of magical way not often heard. Plus the music pushes forward the story.  The kicker is that the opera presents to us the renowned Don Juan in a palatable combination of drama and comedy.

This production fixes the story to the 1940s and 50s.  It is directed by David Lefkowich.  One of the most recognized mythical figures in theatre and literature, Don Juan really motivated those interested in personal freedom.  It is a tale that inspires while entertaining.

The city’s Commandant is killed by Don Giovanni when he enters Commandant’s home and assaults his daughter, Donna Anna.  Aided by his servant Leporello, Don Giovanni attempts to elude the woman he has left (Elvira) and the peasant he attempts to bed, Zerlina. At a party Donna Anna recognizes Don Giovanni as the man who killed her father. She turns to Ottavio to aid her in her search for vengeance. Suddenly three masked people appear – Ottavio, Donna Anna and Elvira – and let the games begin!

The opera also signals the beginning of young Canadian conductor Jordan de Souza as the head of the Orchestre Métropolitain. He is a rising star.
