Dan Auerbach (of The Black Keys who has worked with Dr. John, Ray LaMontagne and Lana Del Rey) is starting to amass quite a collection of artists he has produced songs or albums for. His latest is the Pretenders. The veteran rock band has not released new material in eight years so their fans have been waiting on pins and needles for this. Interestingly the songs on the album were originally meant for a Chrissie Hynde solo project then it just rather organically became a Pretenders album. Hynde is the only original Pretenders band member on the album. The sound of it all is rather wide-ranging. Rather like a Black Keys album. It has always amazed me how tough and tender Pretenders’ music is. Beautiful ballads alongside balls out rockers. A nice combination, if you ask me.
