Montreal, Quebec is the birthplace of Genesis tribute band, The Musical Box. They have forged a career performing shows that recreate those done by Genesis in the 1970s. Together since 1993, they are the only tribute act that has support and permission from the actual group. Steven Hackett has performed with the band, Phil Collins wrote something for them and Peter Gabriel brought his kids to see them in England.
In 1974 Genesis returned to North America bringing with them a new show. It involved a pitch black stage that was lit by two large circular screens. Peter Gabriel, who had at that point developed quite an eerie on stage persona, appeared with shaved temples and elaborate make up. The band played their song using a more improvised style. Phil Collins, the band’s new drummer, laid down a fairly accomplished back beat supporting what everyone else did.
This show was only performed here in North America. Only true fans saw it and even fewer managed to capture it on Super 8 film at their Montreal show at CEPSUM in April of 1974. They played tracks like: Watcher of the Skies, Dancing with the Moonlit Knight, The Cinema Show, I Know What I Like, Firth of Fifth, The Musical Box, Horizon, Battle of Epping Forest, and Supper’s Ready.
Get ready for this new show along with an encore that involves songs from their Lamb Lies Down on Broadway show.
