Irish Band that You Might Not Have Heard Of – The Coronas

From Dublin, The Coronas have released five albums on their own label. They are a case of a band that is big in their home country, but not really known in the rest of the world. Which is a shame as they are a really fun band that makes some great music.

The trio – Danny O’Reilly (vocals/guitar), Graham Knox and Conor Egan – met while in college and formed a band with another friend. That band broke up then the three started up again as The Coronas. In 2006 lead guitarist Dave McPhillips completed the roster. Though their music is rather peppy and poppy, the band can be considered indie rock. Definite influences include Arctic Monkey, Fleetwood Mac, Arctic Fire, and Radiohead.

They released their debut full-length album, Heroes or Ghosts, in 2007. The album was on the Irish charts for about a year and a half. Two years later they released their sophomore album, Tony Was an Ex-Con. The success of the album allowed them to tour Asia and America for the first time. At the 2010 Meteor Awards the album won best album beating out work by U2 and Snow Patrol. 2011 saw bigger and better things for the band with the release of Closer to You. It contained the singles “Addicted to Progress”, “Closer to You” and “Mark My Words”. These songs earned the band more radio play than they had previously ever had. Just last year they released their latest album, Trust the Wire, which contains the hit single “Just Like That”.

An revival of Irish bands has come about in the last couple of years with The Coronas, Hozier and Walking on Cars leading the way.
