Two Left of Center Kind of Guys – Weird Al Yankovic and Emo Phillips

Alfred Matthew Yankovic or Weird Al Yankovic is a man with a lot of hyphens. That is because he is a singer-songwriter-actor-producer-author-director-satirist. What he is best known for are the parody songs. Poking fun at pop culture and what we find cool is his schtick.

He has sold over 12 million albums since he first began in 1976. This kind of popularity has earned him four gold records, four Grammys and six platinum records.

As a child he began in music through his accordion playing. After morphing into Weird Al in college and working as a radio DJ, he began making his parody songs. His first was in 1979 “My Bologna” a parody of The Knack’s “My Sharona”. Soon “Another One Rides the Bus” (“Another One Bites the Dust”), “I Love Rocky Road” (“I Love Rock and Roll”), “Eat It” (“Beat It”), and “Word Crimes” (“Blurred Lines”). He has also released original songs like “One More Minute”, “Dare to Be Stupid” and “This Is the Life”.

Besides writing and singing his own music, Weird Al has also directed videos for acts like Hanson, Ben Folds, The Black Crowes, and The Presidents of the United States of America.
