Many were questioning the logic of redoing The Incredible Hulk as director Ang Lee had just put the monstrous green thing on screen several years ago. Lee’s film was a flop at the box office. He tried to make a mythical creature out of this Marvel comic book hero; it did not work. People want to see the big green guy crush things and toss the bad guys about like rag dolls. French director Louis Leterrier (Transporter 2, Transporter) and screen writer Zak Penn (X-Men: The Last Stand, Elektra) have brought the original vein back to the comic book style. It is all action, CGI Incredible Hulk and enough story to make film fans happy.
We go back to the time when Dr. Bruce Banner (Edward Norton – The Painted Veil, The Illusionist) has fallen victim to his own research and the Gamma Bomb has infected him. He finds himself now turning into a huge green creature that has been dubbed “The Incredible Hulk” when he gets agitated. The Incredible Hulk has superhuman powers and causes chaos wherever he goes. He is also considered to be a perfect weapon and as a result he is hunted down.
Banner ends up being forced underground while he looks for an antidote to his condition. While on the run from the military, led by General Thunderbolt Ross (William Hurt – Children of a Lesser God, Into the Wild), Banner comes close to a cure but everything is jeopardized when a new evil creature The Abomination (Tim Roth – Reservoir Dogs, Hoodlum) starts terrorizing people.
The film is the perfect summer film and not a ‘dumb’ as your usual big budget schlock. This did not surprise me too much as that is usually the case when Edward Norton is involved in a film. He does not do dumb. As usual he did his typical tinkering with the script to bring it up to his exacting standards. The acting from the humans is also better than average (as far as summer /action hero films go) and the CGI effect are comic-booky enough that it will satisfy even those fans.
Keep yourself prepared and at attention for the fun last couple of minutes of this film – they certainly are worth the price of admission. The Incredible Hulk is a fun romp with enough meat to the story to have even the most eye rolling summer film attendee satisfied.
