Born in Alaska, Halie Loren is a young singer who has proven herself interested in connecting a variety of cultures and musical genres within her music. Working with producer Troy Miller (Amy Winehouse, Jamie Cullum), her latest work highlights her growth as a songwriter. From the Wild Sky is her tenth album and the lyrics remain quite poetic. The nature of her lyrics is complimented by her smooth and rich voice. Of the 11 songs here, 10 are originals while the lone cover is a very able rendition of Roberto Livi’s “A Mi Manera”. Topics such as letting go, finding beauty within all the chaos of modern life and finding what your heart truly wants are all explored here. Universal and personal at the same time. Many of the songs were written while she was on tour around the world. Soundwise the music here still falls with the jazz category but there are also other “colours” to be found. Plenty of pop sensibilities as usual with the new twist being some blues and soul thrown in for good measure.
