Making his mark as a magician, illusionist and endurance artist, David Blaine is pretty much the best known act of his kind in the world. His feats of endurance have gained him plenty of recognition and he has broken a couple of world records.
Born in New York, Blaine was the child of a war veteran and a school teacher. At the age of four, he saw while down in the city’s subway he saw his first magic act. So began his interest in magic. After moving to New Jersey for a while, when he was 17, Blaine moved back to New York.
When David Blaine began on television he turned on its ear the way magic had traditionally been shown. Instead of focusing on himself or the magician the camera paid the most attention to the public and their reactions. 1997 was his first television special, David Blaine: Street Magic. Then he took his live show Magic Man across the United States.
What has gotten him the most press are the crazy endurance tests he has done. Tests like being buried alive for seven days, being encased in ice in Times Square for over 63 hours, being unharnessed on the top of a 100 foot pillar for 35 hours, and being sealed inside a plexiglas case suspended 30 feet in the air in London. There are others. All are incredible. And slightly crazy.
