This past March Jessie Reyez became the hottest new thing on the Canadian music scene. The R&B artist is 28-years-old and her debut EP, Kiddo, made its impression courtesy of her searing vocals and obvious passion for what she is doing.
Born in Toronto, but brought up in Brampton, Jessie began playing guitar at a young age and then moved on to writing her own songs in high school. After finishing high school she decided to forgo university and moved to Florida. There while she worked as a bartender she also busked on the side. After getting accepted to The Remix Project’s Academy of Recording Arts Jessie moved back to Toronto in 2014.
Soon after moving back she began to release music. Singles like “Shutter Island” and “Figures” came out in 2016. In 2017 she released an EP and a short film entitled Gatekeeper. The EP was on the long list of the 2017 Polaris Music Prize. After a couple of other nominations and high profile performances on the BET Awards and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, her big arrival was winning the 2018 Juno as Breakthrough Artist of the Year.
