Wes Craven (Red Eye, Scream 3) is a director that is well respected within the horror world and has been for over 30 years. He has made such classic films as “Night of the Living Dead” and “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” that have been imitated time and time again. It is twenty-seven years since the release of this film and it has not been as highly regarded as the two others. Mistake or not?
On their way to a rock concert, two teenage girls try to find some marijuana to smoke. While attempting this Mari (Sandra Peabody – Massage Parlor Hookers) and Phyllis (Lucy Grantham – first film) are kidnapped by a ruthless gang of escaped convicts. The two girls put up a struggle, but they are drugged and put in a car trunk.
After they are driven into the woods they are made to do things they could not have imagined. When news gets back to the parents of what happened to their daughters one of the fathers decides to take matters into his own hands.
The realistic violence in the film sets a precedence for horror films that came after. It is with a primal and sadistic sense that the bad guys commit their horrific acts. Though largely ignored, true horror fans have always spoke out about the film’s value. The movie is a flawed and low-budget one, but it never tries to gloss that over. It’s documentary realism has not often been equalled.
