Signing a major label deal with EMI in 1991 and scoring their first hit with “Creep” in 1992, English band Radiohead has been a major player in the alternative rock scene. The band is made up of Thom Yorke (vocals/guitar/keyboards), Colin Greenwood (bass), Jonny Greenwood (guitar/keyboards), Ed O’Brien (guitar/backing vocals), and Philip Selway (drums/percussion).
1993 the band released their debut album, Pablo Honey, and it did well in their native U.K. It was with their second album, The Bends (1995), and third albums, Ok Computer (1997), that their popularity with critics and music fans grew and they became famous worldwide. Ok Computer is considered to this day one of the best modern rock albums ever recorded.
Next came 2000’s Kid A and 2001’s Amnesiac, which were recorded at the same time. They signalled a change of pace for the rock band as the albums featured plenty of different types of influences like electronic music, jazz and classical. Once again Kid A was named one of the best albums of the decade.
Several more albums came about – Hail to the Thief (2003), In Rainbows (2007) and The King of Limbs (2011). After the release of their eighth album the band decided to take a break. Some band members went on to record some solo stuff. Back together after a few years apart they released the album A Moon Shaped Pool in 2016.
The band has sold almost 40 million albums and are considered by critics as one of the best rock bands of all time. A band who influences plenty of musicians today, they themselves have listed Queen, Pink Floyd and Elvis Costello as among their influences.
