A majority of sequels fail to satisfy a viewer’s need for consistency and character development. This movie is too much of a good time to even care about such things. “Mama Mia Here We Go Again” picks up 5 years after the original. Overshadowed by Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) grieving the death of her mother, the movie flashes back to how Donna (Meryl Streep) arrived in the Greek island of Kalokairi.
The cast of the younger Donna, her friends & lovers (who is Sophie’s father?!??) is bang on, specifically Jessica Keenan Wynn as a young Tanya (Christine Baranski). Dedicated ABBA fans will revel in the b-sides used in the movie. The actors in the film did justice to the ABBA style singing with passion reflective of the era.
I’m not saying “Mama Mia! Here We Go Again” provides a wealth of character depth but it sure was entertaining. It consistently maintains its theme of love. None of the actors took themselves very seriously. Shooting this movie must have been a blast in such a breathtaking location. See this film expecting a good time and you will not be disappointed. If anything, go see this movie to marvel in the wonder that is Cher. With the current chaos in the world at least we still have the amazing Cher. This movie is a welcome respite and all-around fun time.
