Over their 40 years the line-up of Smashing Pumpkins has changed frequently. Right now it is Billy Corgan (vocals/guitar), Jimmy Chamberlain (drums), Jeff Schroeder (guitar), and James Iha (guitar). Based on that you can tell that they are a band which has always built its sound upon guitars. Layering one on top of another, they created their own brand of alternative rock.
As the band’s frontman and primary songwriter, Smashing Pumpkins has always taken the form that Billy Corgan wishes. Within the alt-rock genre they have woven in elements of goth rock, dream pop, prog rock, heavy metal, and electronica. Their first commercial success came with the release of the 1993 album Siamese Dream. After a lot of touring and then releasing their monster hit, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, in 1995, Smashing Pumpkins became a staple in the rock music world. In the 90s they were one of the best selling bands having sold over 30 million albums.
As is often the case with bands, after success came fighting and drug use leading to the band breaking up in 2000. In 2006 Corgan and Chamberlain got back together and released the album, Zeitgeist. After some touring in the years that followed, Chamberlain once again left the band leaving Corgan to work with a rotating roster of musicians. After some time past, in 2018 Iha and Chamberlain rejoined the band.
