Director/writer David Mackenzie’s film Outlaw/King is the story of how Robert the Bruce becomes king of Scotland. As the movie started it occurred to me that the first scene was shot in one continuous shot. This epic start set the mood for an action-packed movie. Also, the competitive relationship between Robert the Bruce and the Prince of Wales is established. The mise en scene is punctuated by impressive Byzantine era costume and props.
Chris Pine was somewhat questionable as a Scotsman. Though not bad with the accent as it didn’t seem forced. Altogether a well cast team that created an action-film movie. Be prepared for plenty of violent battle scenes and sword fights.
Outlaw/King will be a great addition to anyone’s historical film collection, right next to Braveheart.
