In an effort to get the girlfriends/partners of the guys who would be the target audience of this film series to also be interested in watching, co-writer and director Don Michael Paul (Tremors: Cold Day in Hell, Kindergarten Cop 2) has inserted a hunky bad boy who is really good. Hoping that would increase his audience for this straight to video film. Grasping at straws really.
Frankenstein (Nolan North – from television’s Pretty Little Liars) has become too powerful. The powers that be decide he has to be taken down, but that is not going to be an easy task. One attack on him has already failed. Now it is going to be up to Black Ops Specialist Connor Gibson (Zach McGowan – Dracula: Untold, Terminator Salvation).
He is to pose as a prisoner in the super-maximum federal prison where Frankenstein is incarcerated and manage somehow to enter himself into the Death Race. It is during the race Gibson is to take Frankenstein down. To do so he gets inmate Baltimore Bob (Danny Glover – Sorry to Bother You, Death at a Funeral) and Lists (Frederick Koehler – Pearl Harbor, The Circle) to help him build a vehicle to race in. During this time he falls in love with a bartender at a bar within the prison named Jane (Christine Marzano – Seven Psychopaths, Paranoia). He will have to use all of his strength, intelligence and training to survice this brutal race and accomplish his mission.
Dirty and dark. These two words best sum up this Death Race installation. If you can overlook the gratuitous nudity, plotholes as big as craters on the moon, very uneven acting from the cast, and the tons of silly violence then you might find your way to being entertained by this film. It is a big ask…even if you were a fan of the series.
