Having Kendrick Lamar as one of the associated acts on your Wikipedia page is not a bad thing for a musician. Jorja Smith is such a musician. Hailing from an industrial town in the British West Midlands the 21-year-old has been making music professionally since 2016. After releasing a couple of singles that earned her plenty of praise she then dropped her debut album this year called Lost & Found. All this earned her the prestigious Brits Critics Choice Award this year.
Prodded on by her father, who was a musician, Jorja began to take piano lessons at the age of 8. She earned a full scholarship to a music school for high school studying the oboe and classical singing. After finishing, she moved to London and began writing songs.
Having grown up listening to reggae, R&B, punk, hip hop and being obsessed with Amy Winehouse as she grew older. She also says that Lauryn Hill, Alicia Keys and Mos Def are influences. Always recognized and surrounded by great musicians she has toured with Bruno Mars and Drake as well as recorded music with Kendrick Lamar and Stormzy.
