This is the only way I find Adam Sandler palatable. It really is the only way he should be in films. Cannot take his acting but admittedly he is a strong voice actor. That being said, this is the type of film in which you get exactly what you expect. It is not great. It is not awful. The type of film in which the entire family can sit down, watch and enjoy. Such is not always the case for animated films aimed at young audiences.
Simple story. Mavis (voiced by Selena Gomez) feels her father works too hard. With that in mind she decides that the entire (extended) family should go on holiday. She picks a cruise for them to all go on. Drac (voiced by Adam Sandler) is not convinced. That is until he lays eyes on the ship’s captain Ericka (voiced by Kathryn Hahn). A zing (love) happens. But to say that Dracula is a little rusty when it comes to love is a gross understatement. Awkward. And that is not the biggest issue between the two as Ericka has secrets.
Secrets that involve her family. The fact that she is a Van Helsing. Yes, those Van Helsings. Her uncle Abraham Van Helsing (voiced by Jim Gaffigan) has been seeking revenge on Dracula for years. Now, he is using his niece to do just that. Along with an awful giant sea creature known as The Kraken (voiced by Joe Jonas). This is going to be a vacation everyone will remember.
Keeping things rather silly and simple is the name of the game here. That along with a slew of well known people providing voices. The list is endless. You get Steve Buscemi, Chrissy Teigen, Kevin James, Fran Drescher, Molly Shannon, David Spade, Chris Parnell, Keegan-Michael Key, Mel Brooks, and Andy Samberg. All funny people. All adding laughs.
Kids will be entertained. Parents will not be suffering. Fun and harmless diversion.
