Now many of you think that being the wife or girlfriend of a professional football player would be exciting, fun and glamourous but it isn’t. Or so it seems if you are with someone who plays for the San Diego Sabers. It is one challenge after another for Sabers players and their significant others. The men have to worry about staying healthy, learning the playbook and fending off competition. While the wives/girlfriends fill their time with getting their men top notch agents, plan charity events and fending off the groupies trying to get to their men.
Melanie (played by Tia Mowry) learns all this the hard way. She has passed on her chance to attend Johns Hopkins Medical School to concentrate on being Mrs. Derwin Davis. Derwin (played by Pooch Hall) is the star wide receiver for the Sabers. Their married life is one dramatic moment after another which leads to a rocky marriage for them but great television for the viewer. Throw in some humour with all that drama and voila it’s a whole lotta fun.
Though this is not classic television, it certainly is enjoyable. I was thrilled when I found out that BET was bringing back the series (after WB had cancelled it after season three). It is now two years later and as we left Melanie (played by Tia Mowry) and Derwin (played by Pooch Hall) were at the altar. Melanie is now Mrs. Davis and has put her medical career on pause to be a full-time football wife. Derwin has become a star player and a popular one under the guidance of his manager, Tasha (played by Wendy Raquel Robinson). Her son and the San Diego quarterback, Malik (played by Hosea Chanchez), is still living high on the horse. Former teammate Jason (played by Coby Bell) is out of football and co-hosting a sports talk show. He and Kelly (played by Brittany Daniel) are still divorced.
In total the series, which was a spinoff of Girlfriends, ran nine seasons. A long run for a television show! A comedy with a fresh twist on sports with its focus on the women who date or marry football players. Though it is situated in the professional sport arena there are still many situations which are universal and as such highly relatable. Interesting to see how each of the main three women balances their work/family/life.
Many say that the quality dipped after the move from CW to BET while others stuck it out for the subsequent six seasons. Even after season six in which the two leads, Pooch Hall and Tia Mowry, left the show.
