Cinéma Moderne and 24 images continue the 10/10 series, a set of 10 retrospectives and workshops with filmmakers from here and abroad. Following the visit by Thai director Anocha Suwichakornpong, Cinéma Moderne will present in March the works of American filmmaker Penny Lane. The retrospective will take place from March 15 to 20 at Cinéma Moderne with the filmmaker in attendance.

With four feature-length documentaries and a dozen shorts to her credit, Penny Lane has emerged as one of the keenest, most enthusiastic observers of her country’s culture. Her films, filled with humour and empathy, revisit a range of archival footage and deftly explore the relationship between reality and beliefs, truth and narrative construction. As astute as it is entertaining, her work invites us to think about the fundamental nature of documentary cinema and historiography.

Penny Lane is an award-winning non-fiction filmmaker who was named one of Filmmaker Magazine’s “25 New Faces of Independent Film” in 2012. Her feature-length documentary debut, Our Nixon, world premiered at Rotterdam, won the “Best of the Festival” Award at Ann Arbor, and was selected as the Closing Night Film of New Directors/New Films. Her second feature-length documentary, NUTS! premiered at Sundance 2016, where it won a Special Jury Award for Editing. She then directed The Pain of Others, which was selected at Rotterdam 2018, and more recently Hail Satan?, which just premiered at Sundance 2019. She teaches art and art history at Colgate University.

The retrospective will include Lane’s four feature films and a discussion between Penny Lane and Montreal filmmaker Mia Donovan (Deprogrammed) about Satanism as religion, and the relationships between church and state in the US.
