MEET THE ARTIST CINDI EMOND
Thursday, May 2 from 6
to 8 pm
Fine art photographer Cindi Emond will have her first solo Toronto exhibition entitled Circumnavigation, as part of the city wide 2019 Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival in Toronto this May.
The exhibition, which features 45 photographs of vivid, dramatic portraits of people, architectural cityscapes, and landscapes, will be presented as a continuous loop on seven large screens on view at Creeds Coffee Bar at 390 Dupont St. from May 1-31.
Circumnavigation is the pictorial equivalent of a world tour. Through her lens, Emond is creating work that embodies visual story telling, reframing the unexpected. Her images are redolent with visceral moments as she travels the globe photographing in Europe, India, Japan, China, and Africa ever on the lookout for unconventional subjects.
Emond’s landscapes convey breathtaking splendour, tinged at times with a modicum of danger. For example, in the mountainous Valais region of Switzerland, her Les Bisses photograph captures a precarious walkway, formerly a historic irrigation channel, suspended over a stomach-churning vertical drop. The tension between the image and the viewer presents a clear message, “I dare you to look down!”
For this Canadian expatriate, who has resided in Rome for over 20 years, “There is so much beauty out there. I am constantly looking for inspiration and ideas that speak to me and will in turn, resonate with the viewer.”
A hiker, skier and scuba diver, Emond is happiest on the move. A trained sommelier, when she does stop it’s often to capture her appreciation of good wine and food into memorable pictures that evoke the scents and tastes of a place. One such image is Candied Fruit, As Sweet as Honey to a Bee, a sun-drenched photo of candied oranges covered in wasps, taken in an outdoor market in Nice, France.
Emond is a graduate of York University, with degrees in fine arts, photography and graphic design, as well as marketing and communications.
