Spy – Blu-ray Edition

Like many Melissa McCarthy movies I really wanted to be a critic snob and say this film was garbage, but cannot. I laughed a lot. As is often the case her character is just so ridiculous that I was won over. Even if you are not the type to usually enjoy stupid humour I recommend you give this one a try.

As a CIA analyst Susan Cooper (Melissa McCarthy – from television’s The Gilmore Girls) never gets any real action. Meaning she just helps agent in the field Bradley Fine (Jude Law – Closer, Captain Marvel), who she secretly has a crush on, out while he risks his life. Things change a lot when Fine goes rogue and this forces their boss (Allison Janney – I, Tonya, The Girl on the Train) to reluctantly put Susan in the field. Deep undercover in order to work her way into the world of an arms dealer named Rayna Boyanov (Rose Byrne – Bridemaids, Instant Family). Basically to save the world.

Totally a spy satire film and who is more perfect than Melissa McCarthy? Who in Hollywood seems less likely to play a spy? Maybe Betty White…other than that no one. It works perfectly in her and director/screenwriter Paul Feig’s (A Simple Favour, The Heat) favour. A fun version of a fish out of water, which we tend to love in comedy. All the characters here are Plus the fact that we all know that McCarthy will go to any length to get a laugh adds up to a film full of laughs.

Add to the concoction plenty of able actors like Jude Law, Allison Janney, Rose Byrne, Jason Statham (Crank, Fast & Furious 7), Miranda Hart – who is a Brit who is outrageously funny (from television’s Call the Midwife), Bobby Cannavale (Ant-Man, Blue Jasmine), and Morena Baccarin (Deadpool, Serenity). Oh and rapper 50 Cent appears as himself in a pretty funny bit.

Surprisingly (due to all the previous description), the action portion of the film is pretty good. Special applause for a fight sequence which happens in a kitchen between McCarthy and a female assassin is top notch.
