Grammy-nominated, Night Street/Interscope artist K.Flay releases “Not In California” today, the fourth and final instant grat track to be taken off her forthcoming album ‘Solutions,’ due out on July 12. Produced by Tommy English, K.Flay brings her trademark grit and spitfire lyricism to ‘Not In California, a thundering foot stomper of a tune with a adrenaline-boosting chorus guaranteed to make you move. “Not In California” is available on all digital platforms today and as part of the album PRE-ORDER. Watch the eye-catching visualizer HERE.
Speaking about the song, K.Flay reveals: “We’re not in Kansas anymore.’ I think we all know that sensation. Of being in a place that resembles the world you know, but feels different somehow. and the difference is unsettling and disorienting and scary. Kinda makes you wanna click your shoes together and go back home. to how it used to be. Last September, I went to Stinson Beach, California to write and record songs for the album. The plan was to get out of LA for a week, work with two of my favorite people, and enjoy a bit of nature. Stinson is a small town about an hour north of San Francisco, sandwiched between the Pacific Ocean and the Redwood Forest. In the mornings, we’d run along the water or go hiking through the trees. It felt like magic up there. Sometimes you get glimpses of Planet Earth and it astounds you. So big and wild and beautiful. It’s easy to forget that we’re connected to this Planet. We push and pull, evolving together, giving each other life. These days i’ve been feeling a bit like Dorothy. I see the plastic islands and the melting glaciers and the 24 hour news cycle where people shout because loud seems to win and I think to myself. ‘We’re Not in California anymore’
“Not In California” follows three previously released tracks, including “Bad Vibes” which was hailed by PAPER Magazine as “a fizzy blend of jock-jam worthy rock and sugary pop,” and likening the song to Kendrick Lamar, if “’Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe,’ got a rockstar’s facelift,” the Dan Reynolds co-penned “This Baby Don’t Cry,” which The New York Times called “post-punk,” and praising K.Flay for “methodically [tossing] aside feminine stereotypes” and most recently, “Sister” [Listen HERE], praised by Billboard for delivering “a chorus that explodes with bubbly synths and hooky, Annie Clark-esque guitars.” Watch the Lorraine Nicholson-directed video for “Bad Vibes” HERE.
Fresh off a rousing set at Bonnaroo, K.Flay can next be seen at the LOVELOUD Festival this Saturday (June 29) in Utah. This fall, she is confirmed to perform at Austin City Limits as well as embarking on THE SOLUTIONS TOUR, which kicks off on September 3 in Phoenix, AZ. Following a 19-city run in North America, she’ll venture abroad for the UK and European leg of the tour, performing in London, Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris, Berlin, Stockholm, Prague, Munich, Frankfurt and more. SOLUTIONS the album was catalyzed by a three-year whirlwind of world touring and prolific output, which found K.Flay seeking to remind herself of the simple pleasures in life again. Inspired by such an awakening and need for self-care, she’s translated this newfound acceptance into ten genre-bending bangers for the new album, explaining: “When I got home from tour, I was in a dark place,” she admits. “Eventually, I made a decision to focus on the things that actually make me happy: walking around my neighborhood, drawing in notebooks with markers, talking to my mom on the phone. I thought, ‘What did I do as a kid to be happy?’ As a child, you don’t have access to alcohol, drugs, sex, caffeine. I looked back, when I had fun just by making music. I remembered the first time I wrote a song, burned a CD, and played it in my car. It’s the closest thing I’ve ever had to a religious experience. I reconnected with that spirit and stopped taking shit so seriously.” The resulting output in turn showcases K.Flay widening the scope of her signature style by incorporating a variety of analog synths along with live bass and guitar, all the while, bobbing and weaving her way between pop, rock, hip-hop, and electronic moods.
Talking about the title of the album, K.Flay reveals, “The title SOLUTIONS came to me really early in the process,” she continues. “The solution to almost every problem is usually really simple. For me, it’s so basic: staying connected to the people I love, taking care of myself the way I’d want my friends to take care of themselves, and doing things I know are going to make me happy – not what social media or strangers or society tells me. So many of my past records were about problems. Right now I’m in a place where I’m looking for some light. Balance is important. Life doesn’t have to be chaotic in order to be meaningful.”
SOLUTIONS is out July 12.
