Porno @ Fantasia

While this is not a film for everyone, it is plenty of fun. In a quirky, twisted and funny kind of way. The setting is a movie theatre. There are four teenagers working there, a couple of adults and one often naked female demon. Got your attention yet? Thought so…

Porno is not what you might gather from the title. Not a porno, but actually a comedy/horror film. It is at times a little bit of a mess, but there is still a high enjoyment factor if you are down with a cult type B movie. Will definitely be a favourite of younger teen and twenty somthing fans of this sort of thing. Filled with stilted dialogue, cheap looking production value, low grade special effects, mostly wooden acting, and a score which is so over the top it will having laughing at times, this is what the wet dreams of B movie fans are made of.

Abe (Evan Daves – Harold), his best friend Todd (Larry Saperstein – from television’s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series), newly appointed assistant manager Chazz (Jillian Mueller – appeared in episodes of A Gifted Man and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit), and jock Ricky (Glenn Stott) are all working together in a small town movie theatre on a Friday night. Manager Mr. Pike (Bill Phillips – appeared in episodes of House of Cards) leaves Chazz in charge and saying they can watch the film of their choice once they are finished cleaning up. This over the projectionist’s, Heavy Metal Jeff (Robbie Tann – appeared in episodes of Nurse Jackie and Person of Interest), protests.

While the four are still arguing over whether to watch Encino Man or A League of Their Own (film takes place in the 90s), they realize they are not alone. There is an older man (Peter Reznikoff – appeared in episodes of  The Blacklist: Redemption and Altar Boy) in one of the theatres who seems quite drunk. Trying to get him to leave when he flees. Running after him they discover he has run through a boarded up hole in the wall that was hidden by a curtain. The hole leads down beneath the theatre. Soon they discover another theatre beneath the newer one. And then Abe finds a mysterious film cannister. He wants to watch it and soon gets everyone to agree.

Turns out the film is a porno…or so they think. What it turns out to be is a sort of prison for a succubus (Katelyn Pearce – appeared in an episode of Billions). Once they watch the film they release her and all hell breaks loose. Soon the friends and co-workers are fighting for their lives.

Plenty of the laughs in the film come at the expense of bible thumpers. Those who think you are going to hell if you have sex, drink or are a homosexual. Much of the humour in relation to that comes in form of larger than life bits about how all of them are just using their religion to cover up the fact that they are lustful, gay or perverts.

Besides the comedy there is also a significant horror side to the film which involves plenty of blood, guts and jumps. There are certainly parts where you find yourself tensing up preparing for what you think might happen.

While I did enjoy the overall cheesiness and silliness of the film I did find myself wondering a couple of time whether this could have been a good film if they had just taken it all a little more serious.
