Who amongst us hasn’t wished at one time or another that we had super powers? Well, this DC super hero celebrates that feeling and taps into the dream. Shazam! is for all of us.
14 year old Billy Batson (played by Asher Angel) is a kid in the foster system who is full of street sense. Suddenly his life becomes more bearable when he discovers that just by uttering the word “shazam!” he transforms into an adult. Not just any adult but one with super powers. Superhero Shazam (played by Zachary Levi) comes to be because of an old wizard and is really a kid inside of an adult’s body.
New to all of this Shazam sets about figuring out the extent of his super powers. This timeline of fun figuring out is stepped up when he is called upon to save mankind from the evil villain Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (played by Mark Strong). The fight seeing good facing off against evil is full throttle underway.
Shazam! is a superhero film aimed squarely at all. All ages will enjoy the heart of the story and all the laughs. Along with the usual physical antics. For true superhero/comic book fans, the characters here are all based on DC characters.
Though not as financially successful as most of the recent Marvel films, this did well enough at the box office. Don’t take that to mean this is not a good film. Totally the opposite! Such a fun watch. The superhero film, directed by David F. Sandberg, is definitely near the top of the heap when it comes to DC based ones. Gets almost everything right.
A big reason this film works is Zachary Levi. Best known for his equally fun work on the series Chuck, he is totally in his element here with loads of laughs and some action thrown in. Totally keeps things light. With, since it is a superhero film, some dark moments. Nothing feels forced or fake though.
