1982 (TIFF World Premiere, Discovery Programme) is a nuanced drama set on the eve of the 1982 invasion of Lebanon. On the last day of school, 11-year-old Wissam is determined to tell his classmate Joanna that he loves her, while his teachers – on different sides of the political divide – try to mask their fears.
1982 is the feature film directorial debut of international filmmaker Oualid Mouaness, who has uniquely carved out a career – both in Hollywood as a producer of high profile music videos, documentaries, and feature films, and also as a filmmaker of intensely personal Middle East projects, including the 2017 Oscar shortlisted short film ‘The Rifle, the Jackal, the Wolf and the Boy’.
Starring filmmaker/actress Nadine Labaki, one of the Arab world’s biggest box office draws both as a star and a director, and an ensemble debut of young actors, 1982addresses a crucial moment in Middle East wartime history from a fresh and layered perspective
The film is produced by Georges Schoucair’s Beirut-based Abbout Productions in tandem with Mad Dog Films (Lebanon) and Tricycle Logic (U.S. – Lebanon).
International filmmaker Oualid Mouaness, based in Los Angeles and Beirut, is a Sundance Screenwriting Lab alumn who has directed several shorts including the acclaimed “The Rifle, the Jackal, the Wolf and the Boy,” which was shortlisted for a 2017 Academy Award. He has an accomplished history as a producer of award-winning films (Rize) and music videos for artists including David Bowie, Miley Cyrus, Janet Jackson, Britney Spears, Katie Perry, Justin Timberlake and Lana Del Rey.
1982 is his feature film debut as a writer / director.
