A powerhouse cast (Susan Sarandon, Kate Winslet, Sam Neil, Lindsey Duncan, Rainn Wilson). A dying mother brings her family and best friend together for a final weekend before she ends her life. This film by Roger Michell is a remake of the Danish film “Silent Heart”. It is a beautiful story well told that will leave few dry eyes. To say this movie is just about assisted suicide would be doing it a great disservice. The audience learns about the family’s drama and unique dynamic while Rainn Wilson provides much needed, well-timed comic relief. A great film and a punch in my gut.
If art imitates life, is this film leading us to the next portrayal of what people experience when someone they love is suffering from a terminal illness? This film will have some thinking seriously about the pros and cons of assisted suicide.
