The film stars Anthony Perkins, Maximilian Schell, Robert Forster, Yvette Mimieux, Ernest Borgnine, Tommy McLoughlin and Roddy McDowall.
The story follows the crew of an explorer craft U.S.S. Palomino on which they have been searching for extraterrestrial life in outer space. After experiencing some difficulty with their ship, the crew encounters the stunning U.S.S. Cygnus lurking around a black hole. They are amazed at the grandeur of this mysterious ship and are delighted to meet Dr. Hans Reinhardt on board whom they have much respect for. Their meeting turns into a nightmare when they find out that he has concocted a sinister plot with his evil robot companion Maximillian to turn the crew members into robots and fly through the black hole. A meteorite shower damages the ship as the characters have yet to see what awaits them in that black hole.
