Earlier today I had an
enjoyable chat with restauranteur Peter Varvaro at his Smoke Meat Pete’s. The
Varvaro family have been part of the Montreal restaurant landscape for close to
50 years.
In 1974 , Peter’s dad opened the famous Main Deli Steak House, also known as The Main Deli, on Saint-Laurent Boulevard, right across the street from Schwartz’s Montreal Hebrew Delicatessen. I have a hunch that many Montrealers still prefer The Main Deli Steak House over “Schwartz’s. The likes of Celine Dion and Leonard Cohen among many other notables and not so notables graced this landmark Deli with their presence, and this was where Peter learned the ropes and became the top smoke meat producer in Montreal.
