Mamalarky were formed in Austin, TX before relocating to LA, and have been been a significant part of their local scenes in both cities, performing with artists like Crumb, Beach Fossils, Jerry Paper and Faye Webster, and making appearances in other notable bands with keyboard player Michael Hunter touring as a member of White Denim and front-woman Livvy Bennet logging a stint playing bass for Cherry Glazerr. Today, the band are sharing their first new material since their Fire Talk signing with their single “Fury,” which is accompanied by a video from director Ambar Navarro who has directed clips for artists like Soccer Mommy, Cuco and Anna Burch. In March the band will make the trip back to Austin to play this year’s SXSW.
The band have released a consistent stream of singles and an EP over the past couple of years, but their latest single reflects a new approach, moving a way from a more laid-back, keyboard driven sound toward something more forceful and energetic, favoring unwieldy guitars and sneering synth lines in contrast to their dreamier early repertoire.
“‘Fury’, to me, is about feeling overdriven and overworked, and the humor in finding your way as a young adult,” Livvy Bennett explains. “It was probably the fastest I ever wrote a song and it instantly felt very right playing it as a group.”
The band is currently working on their debut full-length to be released summer of 2020 on the label.
Mamalarky’s “Fury” is out now on Fire Talk. It is available on all platforms here.
