Achtung Film!, the Goethe-Institut’s monthly film series, will be presented the first Thursday of every month at the Cinéma du parc in Montreal. The focus remains contemporary German cinema in all its diversity and richness, from fiction to documentary, established to emerging filmmakers, from entertaining to challenging films.
This winter/spring programming includes six fiction films that are very different in style and genre, reflecting current German cinema. We started the series with the staggering drama “Systemcrasher” by Nora Fingscheidt, winner of the Silver Bear at the 2019 Berlinale, had its North American premiere at the Festival du Nouveau Cinéma in Montreal last year. Besides, Sven Taddicken’s “A Wonderful Couple”, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and deals with the question of how much we can forget and forgive. We also show the new film by Jan-Ole Gerster, director of “Oh Boy”, “Lara”, a visually strong portrait of a woman with nothing left to lose, supported by a remarkable cast. “Aren’t You Happy”, the first feature film by writer Susanne Hein-rich, winner of the prestigious Max Ophüls Prize, deals humorously with the decline of patriarchy. Caroline Link’s biographical comedy-drama “All about me” shows the childhood of one of Germany’s favourite actors, Hape Kerkeling, who lost his mother at an early age and soon learned to deal with his pain by the means of humour. We end the series with Marcus Goller’s road-movie “25 km/h” about two brothers and their scooter journey through Germany that stars two of the most sought-after German actors of the moment, Lars Eidinger (“Everyone Else” by Maren Ade ) and Bjarne Mädel (“24 Weeks” by Anne-Zohra Berrached). All films are presented with French or English subtitles.
