GLIDE describes “Leave Tonight” as “…reminiscent of Roy Orbison’s majestic sense of melancholy replete with dreamy harmony vocals… there is power in the musical simplicity that complements the heartfelt, romantic lyrics. The song showcases Myles’ ability to fuse folk and classic pop sounds.”
David Myles is considered something of an undercover musicologist. Within his eclectic artistic continuum, he’s explored jazz, blues, pop, holiday music, French pop, rockabilly, country, folk, gospel, and even hip-hop with noted success. “Inner Ninja,” his collaboration with the rapper Classified is the biggest-selling rap single in the history of Canadian music. David has won countless awards in Canada, including multiple Music Nova Scotia Awards, and East Coast Music Awards, among many others. He’s hosted several radio programmes and in 2018 David published a book for children called Santa Never Brings Me a Banjo (Nimbus Publishing).
The through line in his collected work has been strong song craft— no matter what genre, David has never sacrificed substance for style.
With Leave Tonight, David wanted to explore his personally authentic sound, saying “I didn’t want this record to be about imitation. I wanted to make something that sounded like me. At my best. Not a throw back. Not me in the future, or as alter ego. Or musical chameleon. I wanted to find out who I was in my most natural musical habitat. ….All the sudden I had to go inward.” For creators that can be the deepest well to draw from. He continues, “ I felt like I had to really go back to the fundamentals of why I started to write music in the first place. I had to go back to the sounds I’ve always wanted to hear. The mood I’ve always wanted to see represented in music. “
The project was produced by James Bunton and features longtime touring and recording bandmates Kyle Cunjak (upright bass, electric bass) and Alan Jeffries (acoustic and electric guitars). The trio have been friends since high school and have worked together for over a decade. Rounding out the sessions was percussionist Joshua Van Tassel who has played on many of David’s previous records.
Leave Tonight’s collection of ten songs has at its core a romantic essence coupled with a side of chill and sophistication. Equal parts americana, breezy ballads, folk, and pop ear-worms – the album’s lush vibe gently transports listeners on a dreamy ride.
The complete album will be available on May 8th.
