Following a successful festival run in Rotterdam and London, MAKE UP, the highly praised debut film from British visionary director and 2019 Screen Stars of Tomorrow, Claire Oakley, is making its North American Premiere at the 2020 South By Southwest Film Festival. The film stars BAFTA award winner Molly Windsor in the role of Ruth, a young woman drawn into a mysterious obsession when she suspects her boyfriend (CATHERINE THE GREAT’s star Joseph Quinn) has cheated on her.
Produced by Emily Morgan (I AM NOT A WITCH) and featuring works by Emmy nominated composer Ben Salisbury (EX MACHINA, ANNIHILATION), MAKE UP takes place on a remote holiday park in the North Coast of Cornwall, an eerie setting perpetually covered by thick clouds of fog. The nearby sand and dunes come to contrast with the anxiety-filled tensions that populate this heightened psychological drama. A meditation on sexual awakening embodied by emotionally raw characters who seem to have lost themselves in the trailer park’s labyrinth of caravans, MAKE UP finds multiple meaning in its title, leaving the audience intrigued and free to decide for themselves.
