Takashi Miike and yakuza seems like a marriage made in heaven. Japanese director Takashi Miike has been around for quite a while as he has 104 credits in his IMDB director category with his first work coming way back in 1991. He is huge in Japan and the Asian world and also has a large cult following in the Western world.
Miike definitely has a style and this film falls totally within it. Certainly in his comfort zone here. If you have not seen any of his other films this is a nice, light introduction to him.
Camera work is paid attention to as it follows the frenetic action and chase scenes. A great soundtrack in which the action and story seems to move with it almost as if dancing.
For those not familiar, yakuza are the Japanese version of the mafia. Or organized crime. Here two gangs at war weave a web of violence and terminally ill young boxer Leo (Masataka Kubota – 13 Assassins, Tokyo Ghoul) and prostitute Monica (Sakurako Konishi) get caught in the middle.
While on the run avoiding being killed, Leo and Monica, against all odds, fall in love. It all happens over one night and it is going to be a hell of a ride.
