–  In May and June: broadcast of a series of concerts behind closed doors by Daniel Barenboim

Despite extremely difficult production conditions, the TELEVISION channel MEZZO LIVE HD fights every day to keep the link between the artists and their audience and is pleased to announce the broadcast of two live concerts that will take place behind closed doors: the European Concert of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Kirill Petrenko from the Berlin Philharmonic on Friday 1st of May 2020 at 5 a.m., as well as the Tribute to Tchaikovsky to mark his 180th anniversary from Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Hall, by pianist Denis Matsuev, on Friday, May 8 at 12 p.m. Also coming: a series of concerts filmed behind closed doors in April by pianist Daniel Barenboim.

European Concert – Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra – Friday 1 May at 5am

Since 1991, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra has celebrated the anniversary of its creation every May 1st with concerts in European venues, from Lisbon to Moscow, regularly broadcast on Mezzo. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s concert had to be cancelled. Fortunately, the Berlin Philharmonic managed to organize a live concert from Berlin. In order to respect all the rules of social distancing and hygiene requirements, the program has been adapted to a chamber music ensemble including two very moving masterpieces, two “tubes” of the repertoire: Fratres d’Arvo Purt and Samuel Barber’s Adagio. A concert that will of course be without an audience but the viewers of MEZZO LIVE HD will be able to enjoy live (or delayed thanks to their digital recorders) this exceptional moment.

Program: Arvo Purt: Fratres // Ligeti: Ramifications // Barber: Adagio for strings // Mahler: Symphony No. 4 in G major (Arrangement for chamber orchestra)

Christiane Karg – Soprano

Berliner Philharmoniker

Kirill Petrenko – Direction

Rebroadcast from May 16.

Tribute to Tchaikovsky – Denis Matsuev: Friday, May 8 at 12pm

To mark the 180th anniversary of the birth of composer Piotr Ilitch Tchaikovsky, the famous Russian pianist Denis Matsuev will perform in the historic hall of Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Hall. The program is yet to be determined – the artists will adapt to the changing situation… – but dedicated to the great Russian composer!

These two live and in camera concerts echo May themes on MEZZO LIVE HD. Indeed, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the best orchestras in the world is in the spotlight with three new concerts including  Verdi’s Requiem, directed by Riccardo Muti at the Baden-Baden Festspielhaus in 2019 (May 13 and May 22).

The complete Tchaikovsky Symphonies conducted by Valery Gergiev will also be broadcast at Zaryadye Hall (Symphonies 3 and 6; Symphonies 2 and 5; Symphonies 1 and 4).

Daniel Barenboim – Moment Musical

Between April 10 and 24, Daniel Barenboim recorded Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin and Schumann behind closed doors. Very private concerts to be found in June on MEZZO LIVE HD.

In these difficult times, creation is both increasingly necessary and terribly constrained. Aware of this responsibility, Daniel Barenboim chose to record in “his” Salle Pierre Boulez in Berlin, alone on the piano, with his son Michael on violin or some musicians from the orchestra of the Staatskapelle Berlin, five exceptional concerts dedicated to Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin and Schumann and filmed for Mezzo and Medici.tv, while of course respecting the health rules, as part of the moment series.

May 21 at 8 p.m.: Beethoven – Diabelli Variations; Daniel Barenboim (piano)

June 7 at 8 p.m.: Schumann – Fantasiest-cke, Piano and String Quintet; Daniel Barenboim (piano) and the Staatskapelle Berlin Quartet

June 11 at 10 p.m.: Mozart – Violin Sonatas K454 and 481; Daniel Barenboim (piano) and Michael Barenboim (violin)

June 14 at 8 p.m.: Chopin – Studies, Nocturne, Ballad No. 1; Daniel Barenboim (piano)

June 21 at 8pm: Mozart – Violin Sonata K526 and Variations on Alas I lost my lover; Daniel Barenboim (piano) and Michael Barenboim (violin)
