AKILAH NEWTON PROJECTS SET TO RELEASE
BIG DREAMERS: THE CANADIAN BLACK HISTORY ACTIVITY BOOK, VOLUME 2

AVAILABLE OCTOBER 17, 2020

Multi award winning humanitarian and community activist, Akilah Newton, announced the release of ‘Big Dreamers: The Canadian Black History Activity Book, Volume 2’ – a continued celebration of the Black Canadians who overcame adversity and went on to achieve greatness while changing the course of history.

Set to be released on October 17, 2020 (in honour of the 2nd anniversary of the first volume), Big Dreamers Volume 2 will be accompanied by a line of crayons called “Cultur-ALL Crayons”. The 24 different hues will represent a myriad of skin tones and reinforce the beauty of diverse cultures. The new volume will also pay extra attention to key and vital Black communities in each province and those that left lasting impacts there such as Little Burgundy in Montreal, Hogan’s Alley in Vancouver, Africville in Nova Scotia, Michaëlle Jean, Harry Jerome and Burnley, Allan “Rocky” Jones.

Published via Akilah Newton Projects (formerly Bright Confetti Media) – their goal, as an independent publishing company, is to focus on celebrating diversity in ethnicity, gender, and orientation through literature, games and art activities and supplies. Their outing with Volume 1 was a critical and commercial success with over 5,000 copies sold and an accompanying book tour which took Akilah coast-to-coast. “Black History is Canadian history; simply put,” says Newton, “Stories about the contributions of Black Canadians should be shared year round and should not be restricted to Black History Month.”

This unique series was created by Akilah Newton and Tami Gabay. Newton is the founder of the Montreal based non-profit, Overture with the Arts, an organization that is committed to making performing arts education accessible for children and youth from all walks of life – and Gabay is a creative producer and writer with almost twenty years of experience. A brand of Black plush dolls called Zuri & Dre, a collaboration between Danielle Murell Cox (the creator of the Black Queens & Black Kings colouring books) and Akilah Newton, will be released in November 2020. A national book tour to accompany the launch of Big Dreamers Volume 2 is to come.
