24 SEPTEMBER – 24 OCTOBER 2020 |
Organized by AXENÉO7 (Gatineau) in collaboration with DAIMON (Gatineau) and A Space Gallery (Toronto), Live In Palestine brings together performance work that asks the viewer to consider how bodies, actions and images produce meaning in particular geopolitical spaces. |
The exhibition features works by; Jumana Emil Abboud (Jerusalem), Nihayah Alhaj (Bethlehem), Khalil al-Mozain (London, ON), Rana Affo Bishara (Bethlehem), Mohamed Harb (Gaza), Manal Mahamid (Haifa), Mohammed Musallam (Toronto), Mohamad Mustafa (Bethlehem and Ramallah), Mohammad Obeidallah (Bethlehem), Raeda Saadeh (Jerusalem) and Sharif Waked (Haifa and Nazareth).
Showcasing prominent and emerging contemporary artists currently living and working in Palestine, Live in Palestine focuses on work that combines performative practices with political engagement, addressing some of the complexities of living in occupied Palestine.
This exhibition is a response to the ongoing violation of Palestinian human rights with the continued sieges on Gaza, the shooting of peaceful protestors, night raids and the arrest of thousands of Palestinians including over two hundred children and women. Live in Palestine seems particularly crucial at this moment as Trump’s “deal of the century” sponsors Israel’s plan to annex parts of the West Bank, in defiance of International and Humanitarian Law. All of this is against the backdrop of COVID-19 which has greatly affected political prisoners.
By introducing contemporary Palestinian artists to a Canadian audience, curators AnnaKhimasia, RehabNazzal and Stefan St-Laurent hope to encourage dialogue and exchange.
This exhibition was initiated during the Art & Resistance conference organized by Dar al-Kalima University (Bethlehem).
