North American Premiered at the VIFF
Presented at the Festival du Nouveau Cinéma in Montréal
The North American Premiere of In the Land of the Flabby Schnook by Francis Gélinas at the Vancouver International Film Festival (September 24 – October 05). This film is part of the International VIFF Immersed Competition: Animation. The Quebec Premiere will take place during the FNC (October 7 – 31).
Let’s recall that this film has had its World Premiere at the prestigious Venice Films Festival where it was the only work exclusively from Quebec and self-produced showcased during the Mostra.
A little brother asks his big sister how she managed to stop being afraid of the dark. She draws him into a succession of dreamlike tableaus where everything comes alive and through which the little brother learns to confront his own fears.
Kind of like we reinvented Disney’s multiplane camera for VR technology., The film was animated in 2D, with Toon Boom Harmony software, composited in After Effects, and rendered in multiple depth planes. These were then reimported into the 3D special effects platform Autodesk Maya and spatialized for the VR stereoscopic render.
Francis Gélinas is a graduate of the School of Digital Arts, Animation and Design (NAD – UQAC) in video game design, the Collège de Maisonneuve in multimedia integration techniques, and Concordia’s Fine Arts program, with a major in film animation. He has worked in film and animation for over 14 years. First as an animator, and then as artistic director and producer with Moment Factory, alongside which he founded his own company (couleur.tv) in 2006. He experiments with animation in all its forms: stop motion, 2D and 3D animation, and scenic projections. He has produced animated web series, projection events in amusement parks, and worked on countless commercial projects for clients such as: Igloofest, Radio-Canada, Télé-Québec, Coca Cola, the NFB, Felix & Paul studios, Ubisoft, Sid Lee, 4U2C, to name a few. His first personal film (Bad Dragon) toured to festivals around the world and won the Audience Award at the Fantasia festival.
In the Land of the Flabby Schnook is a couleur.tv production. Illustrated and directed by Francis Gélinas on texts written by Francis Monty with featuring Lileina Joy, Monique Thomas and Daniel Judson. The musical score is composed by Denis Chartrand and Tim Rideout. The Sound design is created by Jean-François Bertrand Sauvé.
