I Musici de Montréal begins its 37th season in style with the presentation of a triple bill on Thursday, November 12 at 2 p.m., via webcast on the Livetoune platform, live from St. Jax Church! Jean-Marie Zeitouni conducts Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater alongside Myriam Leblanc and Maude Brunet, two of the most captivating voices from here. As a prelude, the double bass finds itself at the center of a meditative and enveloping work by composer Missy Mazzoli, followed by the premiere of a commission from I Musici de Montréal to Canadian Kelly-Marie Murphy.
Myriam Leblanc’s voice is described by Ludwig-Van Montréal as “marvellous purity” and “a rare beauty” while Maude Brunet’s voice is “warm, enveloping and pure” according to Le Nouvelliste. Recently, they have been invited by the Opéra de Montréal, the Opéra de Québec, the Orchestre Métropolitain, the Orchestre symphonique de Québec, the Orchestre symphonique de Laval and the Orchestre symphonique de Trois-Rivières, among others.
Double bassist Yannick Chênevert has been a member of I Musici de Montréal since 2012 and has been heard regularly with the Orchestre Métropolitain, the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, the Orchestre symphonique de Québec and Les Violons du Roy. For the occasion, he will be at the heart of Mizzy Mazzoli’s Dark with Excessive Bright, a concerto for double bass and string orchestra premiered in 2018. Mazzoli’s most notable achievement was the creation of the opera Breaking the Waves, inspired by Lars Von Trier’s famous film.
The music of Canadian composer Kelly-Marie Murphy has been described as “imaginative and expressive” by the National Post and “Bartok on Steroids” by the Birmingham News. I Musici de Montréal will perform the world premiere of her work In The Time of Our Disbelieving.
