Cinema Tropical Announces Its Annual List of
Best Latin American Films of 2020
Featuring 25 Productions from Argentina, Brazil,
Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Peru,
Uruguay, and Venezuela, the Select Films Will Compete
for the 11th Annual Cinema Tropical Awards
Cinema Tropical, the non-profit media arts organization leading presenter of Latin American cinema in the United States celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2021, is proud to announce its annual list of Best Latin American Films of 2020, comprising 25 Latin American titles from ten different countries.
Featuring productions from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela, the list includes the Brazilian films Bacurau by Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles and Invisible Life by Karim Aïnouz, winners of Cannes’ Jury Prize and the Un Certain Regard Award, respectively; Fernando Frías’ I’m No Longer Here, Mexico’s Oscar candidate for Best International Feature; the Chilean Oscar entry The Mole Agent by Maite Alberdi, named of the Best Documentaries of 2020 by IndieWire; and the Sundance Award Winner and Gotham Award Nominee Identifying Features by Fernanda Valadez.
The films selected to this list will compete for the 11th Annual Cinema Tropical Awards, which will offer awards for Best Film, Best Director, and Best First Film. The nominees for Best U.S. Latinx Film, as well as the jury members for this competitive category, will be made public on Monday, December 21.
The winners of the Cinema Tropical Awards will be announced in a special online ceremony on Tuesday, January 19, 2021, and will be selected by a jury composed of Diana Cadavid, Artistic Director of the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival (LALIFF) and the Festival Internacional de Cine de Cali (FICCALI); film critic and programmer Jordan Cronk, founder of the Acropolis Cinema screening series in Los Angeles; Tamara Falicov, Professor of the Department of Film and Media Studies and the Center of Latin American and Caribbean Studies and the Associate Dean for Research in the Arts and Humanities in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Kansas; SXSW film programmer and consultant Jim Kolmar; and Chris Stults, Associate Curator in the Wexner Center for the Arts’ Film/Video Department.
All the films under consideration were a minimum of 60 minutes in length and premiered between April 1, 2019, and March 31, 2020.
