Take a look for the first time inside the 2021 edition of New Frontier HERE and see what has been designed to explore at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. Since its launch, the Sundance Film Festival’s New Frontier has served as a showcase for dynamic, innovative work at the crossroads of film, art, and technology. At the Festival’s 2021 edition, a global audience will be able to engage with the works, the artists, and fellow Festival Goers via a bespoke spatialized platform, developed in partnership with digital experience agency Active Theory and accessible via computer and VR headsets.
New Frontier consists of three spaces passholders can explore in the form of an avatar:
- The New Frontier Gallery where the complete slate of live performances, AR, VR, and other emerging media works from New Frontier can be experienced. Most projects can be viewed 24 hours a day. Audio and video proximity chat functions 11:00 a.m. MT to 11:59 p.m. MT.
- Cinema House, the Festival’s social, fully immersive cinema. Schedule of screenings:

Open to all Festival passholders. The “Explorer Pass” is on sale till the end of the Festival and will allow audiences to discover innovative immersive experiences and experimental visions in a new format. You’ll be able to view all of the New Frontier areas and curated works, as well as the Indie Series, and Shorts programs all on-demand during the Festival (U.S. only).
