The time you knew was always around the corner has finally come. Raymond Reddington (played by James Spader) is rebuilding his criminal empire. For a man used to a certain standard of living his current abode – a trailer – is definitely not up to snuff. Of course, Red has a plan…he always has a plan. This time will be a little different as he has Liz (played by Megan Boone) and her husband Tom’s (played by Ryan Eggold) help in this endeavour. It truly is a family affair now.
Everyone has many things going on as once besides this big undertaking. Liz is torn as she is an FBI agent yet is quite attracted to her more criminal side. Tom’s attention is divided as he has to deal with a suitcase filled with human remains. His “issue” is eventually going to affect all three.
The relationship between Liz and Red is less tension filled as what was standing between them is now gone. A big secret has been revealed. The two have dealt with it and have moved on. Just like that! Television magic! It was about time the mystery was resolved. Now they (and us the viewers) can move on. Now the next potential roadblock is whether the new Director of the FBI sees Liz’s relationship with Red as a deal breaker.
I loved the new lighthearted tone to the show though fear not as there are plenty of dark threads running just under the surface. Gotta be somethings that cause tension and that serve to move the plot forward. Red wants the suitcase that is in Tom’s possession. For the time being Tom has a leg up on Red but you know that no one maintains that for long. This could lead to Liz having to make a choice between the two men in her life.
Tom is not the only one with a secret this season as Ressler (played by Diego Klattenhoff) has a doozy of his own. His is not quite as secret as Prescott (played by James Carpinello) knows it. Does not seem like there is going to be a good resolution to this problem. The usually steady character of Ressler is now firmly in a grey zone.
As you have come to expect from this series, it ends with a stunning twist. It keeps you hanging on.
Guest appearances this season by the likes of Nathan Lane, Aida Turturro, Lance Henrikson, C. Thomas Howell, Brian Dennehy, Martha Plimpton, Regina Taylor, John Waters, and Famke Janssen.
