JANA MILLER, PHILIPPE SLY AND JEAN MARCHAND

At Bourgie Hall on May 29 and 30

Webcast available from June 5 to 19

Bourgie Hall welcomes soprano Jana Miller and bass-baritone Philippe Sly to the delight of lyrical enthusiasts. Pianist Jean Marchand will join them for two indoors concerts on Saturday May 29 at 7 p.m. and Sunday May 30 at 2 p.m. A webcast will be available from June 5 to 19.

An ode to femininity, love, and poetry, this concert features two sumptuous lieder cycles composed by Schumann, setting poems which express the different stages of love. Also on the programme, Schumann’s Kinderszenen for piano, which evoke the great love he shared with Clara Wieck.

French Canadian bass-baritone Philippe Sly has gained international recognition for his “beautiful, blooming tone and magnetic stage presence” (San Francisco Chronicle). Equally comfortable performing operatic and concert repertory, Philippe’s study of the German lied, and the music of Franz Schubert in particular, have been a grounding and creative source throughout his career.

Raised in Nova Scotia, Jana Miller is a Berlin-based soprano with a repertoire spanning from early to contemporary. She was the winner of the first prize in singing as well as the prestigious John Newmark prize in the Prix d’Europe Competition in 2014. She was also a silver medalist at the Eckhardt-Gramatté and Hélène Roberge Music competitions.
