Producer and financier Anton (Greenland, “His Dark Materials,” The Night House), Basil Iwanyk’s Thunder Road Pictures and Gerard Butler and Alan Siegel’s G-BASE (Greenland, Has Fallen Trilogy, Den of Thieves, Law Abiding Citizen) have announced a sequel feature to the global hit action thriller GREENLAND. The core filmmaking team returns with director Ric Roman Waugh (Angel Has Fallen, Shot Caller) headlining from a script by Greenland writer Chris Sparling (Lakewood). Gerard Butler reprises his role as structural engineer John Garrity alongside co-star Morena Baccarin (Deadpool, “Homeland”) as Allison Garrity.
In a continuation of the story, the Garrity family, who survive a near-extinction level event when an interstellar comet hits the earth, must leave the safety of the Greenland bunker and embark on a perilous journey across the decimated frozen wasteland of Europe to find a new home.
Principal photography is scheduled for 2022.
The first feature, Greenland, defied global box office expectations when it debuted last summer to impressively robust box office numbers amidst worldwide lockdowns and limited theatre capacity. The film launched at the #1 spot theatrically in over 26 countries including Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and Russia. Following the U.S. and international theatrical roll-out by STX, the film debuted digitally on SVOD followed by an exclusive run in the U.S. on HBO Max. The critically lauded film, praised for bringing an engaging human story backdrop to the disaster film format, topped the rental features VOD list on both Apple and Google Play at a premium rental price.
Ric Roman Waugh said: “Greenland spoke to our humanity in the middle of a global catastrophic event, highlighting what people are capable of doing to one another, both good and bad, when it’s life or death. The irony is we made the first film pre Covid and watched many situations come to reality. I’m really looking forward to the next chapter of The Garritys post the first extinction event.”
Anton’s Sébastien Raybaud stated: “Ric, Gerard and Morena delivered one of last year’s most entertaining blockbusters. We have no doubt that worldwide audiences will be lining up to join the Garrity family for the next installment of this ultimate survival adventure.”
G-BASE’s Gerard Butler/Alan Siegel stated “We are thrilled that a film about the human spirit has connected with audiences around the world. As the Garrity’s continue on their journey, we can’t wait for audiences to see how their story unfolds.”
Morena Baccarin recently completed two features scheduled for release in 2021: The Good House opposite Sigourney Weaver and Kevin Kline, and Last Looks, an action-suspense film opposite Charlie Hunnam and Mel Gibson. She was just announced as the lead of NBC’s Untitled Nick Wootton/Jake Coburn pilot.
Waugh is a director, writer, and producer. He most recently reunited with frequent collaborator Gerard Butler on the STX worldwide hit Greenland, which opened #1 in 49 markets internationally. In 2019, Waugh and Butler teamed for the worldwide box office hit Angel Has Fallen, the most successful film in the Has Fallen series, and they will next reteam on the upcoming action thriller Kandahar. Previously Waugh wrote and directed the thrillers Shot Caller, starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Snitch, starring Dwayne Johnson. Additionally, he directed Felon from his own screenplay for Sony Pictures. The prison-based drama starred Val Kilmer. Waugh also produced and directed the critically acclaimed documentary That Which I Love Destroys Me, about two special operations soldiers grappling with PTSD as they return to the United States.
