Verdi’s and Mozart’s most wonderful arias, an original work by Michel Marc Bouchard and Julien Bilodeau, a heartbreaking double-bill, and the finest singers from home and abroad, all season long—this is what awaits you in 2021-2022!
Also, for the second time this season, opera fans will be able to take advantage of Sunday afternoon performances at 2 pm, making it easier for many music lovers to attend! This is in addition to the very popular series of free Let’s Talk Opera! events, which will continue to expand throughout Montreal and nearby suburbs.

LA TRAVIATA by Giuseppe Verdi
Josephine Baker is a major icon, encapsulating the emancipation of black women. Her boldness is evoked in this brand-new version of Verdi’s famous opera, showcasing the talent of the great Quebec soprano Marie-Josée Lord.
Synopsis: Paris in the 1920s… The Roaring Twenties. Cabaret artist Violetta is a proud and renowned courtesan. Young Alfredo is a man from a good family. Foolish and in love, they will try to rebel against the conventions that separate their two worlds, engaging in a passionate love affair. But at what cost?

LA BEAUTÉ DU MONDE by Julien Bilodeau and Michel Marc Bouchard
WORLD PREMIERE
After the successful premiere of the deeply moving opera Les feluettes in 2016, Quebec playwright Michel Marc Bouchard is back at the Opéra de Montréal with an original libretto about the epic rescue of artwork from the Louvre during World War II. Proof of the inestimable value of art and beauty.
Synopsis: World War II is wreaking havoc… While France has suffered an important defeat at the hands of the Germans, the fight continues on the art front when Hitler arrives in Paris. As Nazi officers plan to plunder the Louvre of its precious masterpieces, Jacques Jaujard and Rose Valland risk their lives orchestrating a historic clandestine rescue.

Having charmed audiences around the world, Barrie Kosky’s thrilling production recalls the silent film era with its surprising set that makes use of screens and projections. It’s The Magic Flute like you’ve never seen it before!
Synopsis: Armed with a magic flute and enchanted bells, Prince Tamino and bird-catcher Papageno rush to the rescue of Princess Pamina. On the way, they find dangerous dragons, dancing animals, and… love!

Ballet-Opéra-Pantomime (BOP) and I Musici de Montréal chamber orchestra are joining forces with the Opéra de Montréal and its Atelier lyrique for a double bill in which the sea has a starring role. The sea that feeds us… but that also robs us of life.
Mirroring the opera Riders to the Sea, the new work Le flambeau de la nuit echoes the same themes, weaving together a unified dramatic structure that looks both to the present and back to the past.
